First-gen BlackBerry Storm 9530 owners to get flick scrolling, improved browser

For owners of the original model of the BlackBerry Storm, seeing the improvements in the sequel might hurt. While the original word from Verizon was that Wi-Fi was not necessary on the 9530 because of the carrier’s blazing fast EV-DO Rev. A network, adding it to the Storm2 along with an improved version of the SurePress typing system, has made many Verizon customers decide to swear off being first adapters. No, Big Red will not give any special credit to owners of the first Storm who want to upgrade to the new model. But there is something that RIM and Verizon is doing for owners of the 9530.

According to a Verizon rep, a firmware upgrade will make the Storm and the Storm2 practically identical when it comes to software. In other words, things like flick scrolling, tabbed browsing and threaded texting will all be enabled on the original unit. The rep confirmed that the only difference between the two handsets will be hardware related items, like a Wi-Fi radio, slightly sleeker design and plastic buttons. And let’s not forget the four sensors for the SurePress typing which will allow for multi-touch typing, and the piezo technology that freezes the screen when the power is off. Throw out all those hardware improvements, add the new OS upgrade, and yourBlackBerry Storm 9530 will be the same as the Storm2 9550-except where your pocketbook and wallet is concerned.

First Images: BlackBerry Watch is FOR REAL!

* Update - Just to be clear as I’ve seen some confusion in the commments, but as far as we know at this time the inPulse watch is not being made by/for BlackBerry (it won’t feature a BlackBerry logo), but is being made for use with BlackBerry Smartphones. However, this is in fact “the BlackBerry watch” that has been referred to previously in articles dating back to WES in May. There isn’t another RIM-built BlackBerry watch out there. *

Remember that story about a Bluetooth BlackBerry Watch accessory being in the works? In case you were doubting it, today we can say with certainty that it’s happening, it’s getting announced soon, and what you’re looking at above (another image below) are actual renderings of the real deal. Key features we’ve been told so far about the BlackBerry-connected smartwatch by our source:

  • it has been designed specifically for use with BlackBerry Smartphones from the ground up – developed by a new BlackBerry-dedicated accessory company
  • it features an OLED screen that we hear is “big, bright and beautiful” and optimized for displaying text clearly, and thanks to OLED has solid battery life
  • it’s designed to show you notifications and previews of messages arriving on your BlackBerry
  • judging by the filename of the photos as they were sent in to us, we’re thinking it’s going to be branded the inPulse smartwatch

The intent of the watch isn’t to replace using your BlackBerry to view messages. Rather, it’s for those occassions when your BlackBerry is tucked away – while in a meeting, while driving, or while you’re out for a bike ride and you feel it vibrating in your camelback. When you get thatimpulse to stop what you’re doing and pull out your BlackBerry, now you can quickly glance over at your inPulse and decide if you need to pull out your BlackBerry to address that message now or if it can wait fifteen minutes you’re free.

Definitely a cool accessory. And because this smartwatch is desiged specifically for BlackBerry, we’re thinking hoping that at somepoint the watch APIs will become available to BlackBerry app developers so even notifications from third party apps could be displayed. CrackBerry heaven! We’ll bring you the official details on this when they emerge soon.

20% off @ bPlay!

I’ve been meaning to write about two of bPlay’s new offerings for the longest time now and with the 20% off coupon that arrived in my box today, I thought today would be the perfect day. Thats right, if you use the code EMAIL20 now through Sunday (February 1st) you get 20% off your purchase. Which is great for those that want to pick up the coolest Games and themes for your BlackBerry.

First is the
NYT Crosswords
game that is available. For those die hard crossword fans this game is it as it allows you to play the same crossword puzzles published daily in The New York Times on your mobile phone. There are also up to 30 classic puzzles bundled in the game. It is a subscription based game (meaning you pay monthly) but its less then the cost of a paper and you get the same fun, just on your berry. Its actually a pretty cool game. This runs $2.99 a month.

NYT Crosswords

The other I wanted to talk about is probably the coolest theme thats hit the berry in a while.
Solar Slideshow
is almost exactly what it says. In this theme, 10 images combined of the sun and nine planets in the solar system rotate on your screen’s background. The image changes once per 30 minutes, so your device will continually look fresh with stunning celestial imagery. The imagery is amazing, the fact that it changes is something cool too. I would bet that more themes like this will be hitting the berry soon enough (could you imagine an underwater theme like this?). You can grab it from bPlay for the regular price of $5.99 but if you do it today you can use the coupon for a 20% off discount!
