There are several things you can do to extend the life of your battery between charges.

Set Email Filters. Yes that’s right, set some email filters to block unnecessary messages received on your handheld. The fewer wireless transmissions your BlackBerry makes, the longer your battery will last.

Decrease the backlight timeout and/or brightness. This is especially true for the newer 7100, and 7290 handhelds. Go to Options –> Screen/Keyboard to set the backlight options.

Disable wireless sync on applications that you do not use, e.g. Memopad. Is it really necessary to transmit memopad data over the air? If not, then just disable Wireless Synchronization from the Memopad Options.

Turn Wireless Off when you are in areas of poor coverage. The BlackBerry will greatly increase it’s output in poor coverage, and this can be very draining on your battery.

Set the Auto On/Off. Unless you’re on call 24 hours a day, chances are you won’t be using your BlackBerry late at night. So set the Auto On/Off to shut your BlackBerry off.

Set your profiles to have the BlackBerry vibrate and ring less often. Even just reducing the number of beeps can give you a little extra battery life.

As a last resort, if your BlackBerry battery simply doesn’t last long enough, you can buy an extra battery. If you have any tips or tricks you’d like to share with us, leave a comment or hit us on Twitter

At launch, dtac will be offering BlackBerry service with the new BlackBerry® Curve™ 8520 smartphone, including a special edition white model.

Khun Thana Thienachariya, Chief Commercial Officer of Total Access Communication Public Company Limited (dtac), said “BlackBerry smartphones are increasingly popular in the mainstream market and dtac is pleased to launch the BlackBerry solution backed by our strength and expertise in this area.

“BlackBerry smartphones provide an exceptional, feature-rich experience for people on the go and dtac’s high speed data network, dubbed “dtac Internet”, allows customers to enjoy fast and seamless service anytime and anywhere. BlackBerry service enables wireless email, internet surfing and social networking, among many other uses, and customers will appreciate the performance and reliability of dtac Internet which was recently rated highest for quality and speed in a survey of IT retailers around the country.”

dtac will be offering the BlackBerry Curve 8520 smarphone, in two colors – a glossy black finish and a special white model for the festive season. The BlackBerry Bold 9000 smartphone is also in the launch line-up.

“We are very excited to be launching the new BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone in Thailand with dtac and we believe it will be a popular choice with customers,” said Gregory Wade, Managing Director of Southeast Asia. “More and more people are switching from basic cell phones to smartphones and the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is an exceptional choice for first-time smartphone users.”

The new BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone is an incredibly approachable smartphone. It provides easy access to email, messaging (IM, SMS, MMS) and social networking sites (including Facebook® and MySpace), as well as rich multimedia capabilities. It introduces an innovative touch-sensitive trackpad for easy navigation and is also the first BlackBerry® smartphone to feature dedicated media keys, integrated along the top of the smartphone, giving customers an easy, convenient way to control their music and videos. The BlackBerry Curve 8520 is a world phone and supports Wi-Fi®, allowing faster Web browsing and extended data coverage.

In March 2009, Vodafone and dtac announced the signing of a Partner Market Agreement in which the two companies will cooperate to make certain products and services available to customers, including the BlackBerry solution. Richard Daly, CEO of Vodafone Partner Markets, commented “We are pleased to extend our cooperation with dtac to include the BlackBerry solution to complement our work together in roaming services and the shared success with our largest multinational accounts under the Vodafone Global Enterprise program. As part of our global marketing, support and product development community for the BlackBerry solution, we look forward to a close cooperation and excellent service to our mutual customers.”

AT&T Bold 9700 Box

So the AT&T Bold 9700 arrived this morning (a day earlier then FedEx said it would, but I’m not one to complain!) and I was immediately in love with the device. The box itself is the usual AT&T box, orange, pretty, complete. Upon opening the box, you’re greeted with the phone glaring at you with the usual stickers on it.

The contents of the box include the head phones, holster, charger, and CD with the Blackberry User Tools (BBDM). Also included is the Quick Start manual no one looks at. I will admit that when I first opened the box, I was a little taken back by the size of the 9700. I got used to the larger feel of the 9000, and the 9700 is a deal smaller in comparison. The back battery door slides off as opposed to the latching door on the 9000 and it has the same leathery patch on it that the 9000 has.

Boot time of the new phone was surprisingly fast, I’m sure that will slow a bit once I load some programs and my email in to the device, but for the moment, this is one of the quickest devices I’ve used. The Memory listed shows that there is 127mb of free space for apps, and 1.8gb of storage available. Its running OS 5.0.0.296 (Platform 5.1.0.83).

My initial observations of the 9700 are good, it looks and feels like a nicely made device. It does seem that it will take some time to get used to the trackpad as opposed to the ball, but the nice thing about the pad is that it won’t get stuck like the ball does (we hope). I’ll load the phone up with devices and use it a bit over the weekend and I’ll post a complete review with screenshots early next week.
This is awesome news for those business users wanting something new. From the email:

Today, the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is available for sale to ABS customers served via Phoenix and Premier On Line. The new 3G BlackBerry Bold 9700 offers powerful performance with sleek, refined design and is only the second handset to join the elite BlackBerry Bold family of smartphones

Another good tidbit from the email is that it will be live for EVERYONE else on November 22nd.

Also announced was the 8520:

BlackBerry Curve 8520
Today, AT&T also announced the new BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone, which will be available to AT&T customers in the coming weeks. The 2.5G BlackBerry Curve 8520 is the latest addition to the best-selling Curve family and offers significantly improved processor speed and memory compared to the Curve 83XX series.

Its about time the Curve gets some AT&T love!

Edit: Price on the 9700 for upgrade/new accounts is apparently $174.99!!
